Student safety is a growing concern, with women being particularly targeted. Nobody has invented a “creepy guy” sensor, but LoRaWAN sensors play an important role in helping university students feel safer on the streets of Reading (UK). This talk describes how a 19-year old trainee’s idea inspired Thingitude to work with local government and the university to deliver a city-wide network of sensors and MyWay – a personal safety app co-designed with women students. The talk also looks at how making street-level data available on an open data platform can create wider benefits for the town.
