Increasing demand for efficient geolocation and comprehensive asset management is a growing global trend for the IoT across many industries and use cases. However, massive adoption of such solutions has been hindered by high power consumption and associated costs for the existing solutions.

Semtech has developed an innovative and integrated hardware, software, and Cloud services solution: LoRa Edge™. LoRa Edge features integrated geolocation capability with both GNSS and Wi-Fi to fill this gap in the market. The solution enables energy consumption at a mere 20µWh and 3µWh for GNSS and Wi-Fi scanning respectively. This translates to operation at one tenth the power of competing solutions. For the end user, a 500mAh battery allows GNSS scanning at 30-minute intervals and Wi-Fi scanning at six minute intervals, for up to five years.

The solution provides an optimal split between low power edge sensing and processing in the Cloud while harnessing the extreme energy efficiency of LoRaWAN® network connectivity. Enhanced security is implemented through an advanced crypto engine that stores and manages encryption and decryption such that security keys are never publicly exposed.
