STS was created in 1993 by Eskom (South Africa) in order to provide access to accurately billed prepaid energy to millions of consumers. The meter stays offline, and when tokens run out, the meter shuts down until a new token is purchased and topped up on the meter using the meter keypad. Utilities therefore do not have access to itemized load profile data of the meter to allow novel demand response applications.

To date, most meter roll-outs currently underway in Africa and other emerging markets continue to be based the STS standard and are therefore still not smart.

This Keynote details our journey towards developing Swift Concentrator DLMS/COSEM Bridge which bridges traditional PLC based non smart meters to the LoRaWAN network for utilties and consumers. Through this innovative upgrade, already rolled out offline STS meters are now made smart without having to go into the home or commercial property to install new smart meters. It is estimated that this solution will upgrade an existing base of 20 million meters in Africa to smart, at a fraction of the cost of replacing them with new smart meters.

It is the first product PLC to LoRaWAN Concentrator ever developed.
