Distance sensing measures the range between the device and a target surface or object, usually in centimeters or millimeters. LoRaWAN distance sensors commonly use ultrasonic echo timing, optical time-of-flight (laser), or radar to determine that range, then send the value as an uplink over a LoRaWAN network. Low duty cycles and battery operation let many devices run for years on infrequent reports.
