IP22-Rated LoRaWAN Devices

IP22 marks LoRaWAN devices protected against fingers and dripping water tilted up to 15 degrees, built for sheltered indoor environments.

IP22 is an ingress-protection rating defined by IEC 60529. Read each digit separately: the first digit, 2, indicates protection against solid foreign objects 12.5 mm and larger, including a finger or similar body part, but not against fine dust. The second digit, 2, indicates protection against vertically dripping water while the enclosure is tilted at any angle up to 15 degrees from its normal position.

In practice, IP22 is an entry-level indoor rating. It is a sensible fit for sheltered, low-dust locations where occasional drips or light condensation can occur, but it is not built for harsh conditions.

Choose an IP22 device when the deployment is:

  • Indoors and reasonably clean, such as offices, rooms, or covered service spaces
  • Exposed only to dripping water, not sprays, jets, rain, or immersion

Enclosure rating matters because a sensor placed beyond its limits can corrode or fail. For dusty, wet, or outdoor LoRaWAN deployments, step up to a higher IP rating.

Frequently asked questions

What does IP22 mean?

Per IEC 60529, the first digit (2) means protection against solid objects 12.5 mm and larger, such as fingers; the second digit (2) means protection against vertically dripping water when the enclosure is tilted up to 15 degrees from vertical.

Is IP22 waterproof?

No. IP22 only resists dripping water at a slight tilt. It does not protect against sprays, jets, heavy rain, or immersion, so it is not suitable for outdoor, washdown, or submersible use.

Where can I use IP22 devices?

IP22 suits clean, dry indoor settings such as offices, living spaces, and protected utility areas where minor condensation or drips may occur but no dust ingress, spray, or submersion is expected.
