IP4X-Rated LoRaWAN Devices

LoRaWAN end devices carrying an IP4X enclosure rating, protected against solid objects 1 mm and larger with liquid ingress left unspecified.

The IP4X rating comes from IEC 60529. The first digit, 4, certifies that the enclosure blocks solid foreign objects of 1.0 mm and greater, wires, screws, fasteners and small tools cannot reach the internals. The second character is X, meaning the liquid-ingress characteristic was not specified or tested, so no waterproofing claim is made.

This makes IP4X a good fit for dry indoor or sheltered deployments, control cabinets, equipment rooms or panel mounts, where the priority is keeping debris and probing objects out, not resisting water.

When choosing a LoRaWAN device, match the enclosure rating to the environment:

  • IP4X covers solids only; pick a rated second digit for wet, washdown or outdoor sites.
  • For dusty conditions, look toward IP5X or IP6X dust protection.

Sensors, gateways and trackers listed here all declare an IP4X rating. Always confirm the full datasheet rating against your installation, since outdoor or humid sites typically need verified liquid protection.

Frequently asked questions

What does IP4X mean?

Under IEC 60529, the first digit 4 means the enclosure is protected against solid foreign objects of 1.0 mm and greater, such as wires, screws and small tools. The ‘X’ means the second (liquid) characteristic was not specified or tested.

Is IP4X waterproof?

No. The ‘X’ indicates no rated liquid-ingress protection, so an IP4X device makes no waterproofing claim. It is not protected against dripping, spraying or submersion unless a separate IPX rating is given.

Where are IP4X devices suitable?

IP4X suits dry indoor or sheltered settings where stray wires, fingers or small debris must be kept out of the enclosure but liquid exposure is not a concern.
