IP52 is an ingress-protection rating defined by IEC 60529. Reading the two digits separately tells you exactly what the enclosure withstands:
- First digit (5), solids/dust: Dust-protected. Some dust may enter, but not in a quantity that interferes with operation. Contact with hazardous parts is also prevented.
- Second digit (2), liquids: Protected against vertically dripping water when the enclosure is tilted up to 15 degrees from its normal position.
This makes IP52 a light indoor rating. It handles settling dust, condensation, and the occasional drip from above, so it fits offices, utility rooms, and enclosed cabinets. It is not built for dusty industrial floors, direct spray, washdown, driving rain, or any submersion.
When selecting a LoRaWAN device, the IP rating sets the deployment envelope. Match it to the real environment: an IP52 sensor placed outdoors or near jetting water will likely fail prematurely. For harsher conditions, step up to a higher second digit such as IP54, IP65, or IP67.

Frequently asked questions
What does IP52 mean?
Under IEC 60529, the first digit 5 means dust-protected: ingress of dust is not fully prevented, but cannot enter in a quantity that interferes with operation. The second digit 2 means the enclosure resists dripping water falling vertically when the housing is tilted at any angle up to 15 degrees from its normal upright position.
Is IP52 waterproof?
No. IP52 only guards against vertically dripping water at a slight tilt. It is not rated for spraying, jets, heavy rain, washdown, or submersion. For outdoor or wet sites, choose a higher second digit such as IP54, IP65, or IP67.
Where is IP52 suitable?
IP52 suits sheltered indoor environments with light dust and occasional condensation or drips, such as offices, equipment rooms, and enclosed cabinets. It is not intended for exposed outdoor mounting.
