IP53 is an ingress-protection rating defined by IEC 60529. The two digits describe two different hazards, so decode them separately.
- First digit, 5, solids/dust: the enclosure is dust-protected. Dust may enter but only in amounts that do not interfere with operation; it is not fully dust-tight (that would be 6).
- Second digit, 3, liquids: protection against water sprayed at any angle up to 60 degrees from vertical. It does not cover stronger jets, all-angle splashing, or immersion.
In practice, IP53 suits dusty yet sheltered indoor areas and lightly exposed outdoor positions, such as under an overhang or inside a cabinet. It is not rated for washdown, hose-down cleaning, driving rain from all directions, or submersion.
Enclosure rating matters because a LoRaWAN sensor often stays deployed for years. Matching the IP rating to real dust load, water exposure, and mounting helps prevent corrosion, false readings, and early failure. For tougher sites, step up to a dust-tight or immersion-rated device.

Frequently asked questions
What does IP53 mean?
Under IEC 60529, the first digit 5 means the enclosure is dust-protected: dust ingress is limited and not enough to interfere with operation, though it is not fully dust-tight. The second digit 3 means it is protected against water sprayed at angles up to 60 degrees from vertical.
Is an IP53 device waterproof?
No. IP53 covers sprayed water from above only, not jets, heavy rain at all angles, or submersion. It is splash- and spray-resistant rather than waterproof, so avoid washdown, immersion, or direct hosing.
Where is IP53 suitable?
It fits dusty but sheltered indoor spaces and partially protected outdoor spots, such as under eaves or in enclosures. For full dust-tightness or jets and immersion, choose a higher rating like IP65 or IP67.
