Under IEC 60529, IP55 breaks down into two digits. The first digit, 5, means the enclosure is dust-protected: dust ingress is not completely prevented, but any dust that enters is limited and cannot interfere with the device’s operation. The second digit, 5, means it is protected against water jets projected from a nozzle in any direction at low pressure, with no harmful effects.
That combination makes IP55 a practical, widely used rating for LoRaWAN sensors and gateways installed outdoors or in demanding indoor settings:
- Outdoor mounting exposed to rain, spray, and windblown dust
- Agricultural, industrial, and utility environments
- Light hose-down or cleaning, but not immersion
Enclosure rating matters because it defines where hardware can survive long-term. An under-rated device may fail early from moisture or dust, while over-specifying adds cost and bulk. IP55 strikes a common middle ground: robust against weather and jets, but not sealed for submersion. If your site involves immersion or powerful pressure washing, step up to IP67, IP68, or IP69K instead.
