An IP66 rating is defined by IEC 60529, where each digit describes a specific kind of protection. The first digit, 6, is the highest solids rating: the enclosure is completely dust-tight, allowing no dust ingress whatsoever. The second digit, also 6, means the device is protected against powerful water jets projected from any direction, such as those from a hose or pressure washer.
This combination makes IP66 a strong choice for exposed and demanding environments. It handles outdoor installations, dusty industrial floors, agricultural sites, and washdown areas where equipment is regularly sprayed or rinsed. What IP66 does not cover is immersion: it is not rated for temporary or continuous submersion, so applications that risk flooding or underwater placement should look to higher liquid ratings.
When selecting a LoRaWAN device, the enclosure rating determines where it can be deployed safely. Matching the IP rating to real site conditions, including dust, rain, and cleaning routines, prevents premature failure and costly field replacements.

Frequently asked questions
What does IP66 mean?
Under IEC 60529, the first digit (6) means the enclosure is fully dust-tight, with no ingress of dust at all. The second digit (6) means it is protected against powerful water jets from any direction.
Is IP66 waterproof?
IP66 protects against high-pressure water jets, but it is not rated for immersion. Devices that must survive being submerged need IP67 or IP68 instead. IP66 is ideal for rain, washdown, and hose-down environments rather than underwater use.
Where should I use an IP66 device?
IP66 suits exposed outdoor, dusty, and industrial settings: rooftops, agriculture, utility poles, and washdown areas where strong jets, rain, and dust are expected but submersion is not.
