LoRaWAN lightning sensors detect electromagnetic discharges, estimate storm distance, and send strike alerts over long-range, low-power wireless networks.

Lightning sensing identifies the electrical discharges produced by thunderstorms, both cloud-to-ground strikes and intra-cloud activity. A LoRaWAN lightning sensor watches for the characteristic electromagnetic pulse (and on some models the optical flash) of each discharge, distinguishing real strikes from man-made electrical noise.

When a strike is detected, the device transmits a small uplink over the LoRaWAN network, typically reporting an event flag, an estimated distance to the storm, and a cumulative strike count. Because LoRaWAN is low-power and long-range, these sensors can run for years on batteries in remote, outdoor locations.
