LoRaWAN Wind Direction Sensors

LoRaWAN wind direction sensors report the bearing of the wind in degrees, wirelessly relaying compass-referenced data from remote and exposed sites.

Wind direction sensing reports the compass bearing the wind is blowing from, expressed in degrees from 0 to 360 (or as cardinal points). LoRaWAN devices use either a mechanical wind vane that rotates to align with the airflow, or an ultrasonic head with no moving parts that measures direction electronically.

The sensor samples direction on a schedule, then sends a small uplink over LoRaWAN to a gateway. Because the protocol is long-range and low-power, these devices run for years on batteries or solar and suit masts, rooftops, and remote field sites where wiring is impractical.

Common deployments include:

  • Agriculture and crop spraying decisions
  • Weather and microclimate monitoring networks
  • Building, bridge, and crane safety
  • Wildfire risk and air-quality dispersion studies

When comparing devices, look at directional resolution and accuracy, reporting interval, battery or solar options, IP/enclosure rating, supported regional frequency plans, and whether a payload decoder is provided. Many units pair wind direction with wind speed and other weather parameters in one station.

Frequently asked questions

How does a LoRaWAN wind direction sensor work?

A wind vane (or an ultrasonic anemometer head) detects the bearing the wind is coming from and converts it to a compass heading in degrees. The device samples at set intervals, then transmits the reading over LoRaWAN to a gateway, so no cabling or local power is needed at the mast.

What's the difference between wind direction and wind speed sensors?

Wind direction reports the bearing (0-360 degrees, where the wind originates), while wind speed reports velocity. Many LoRaWAN weather stations combine both, often using a single ultrasonic head, and send the two values together in one uplink payload.

How accurate are LoRaWAN wind direction readings?

Accuracy depends on the sensing element. Mechanical vanes typically resolve to roughly a few degrees, while ultrasonic sensors avoid moving parts and can be more precise. Always check the datasheet’s stated resolution, accuracy, and any dead-band near north.
