Can someone help me to understand LoRa

Dear all, I’m hoping to understand what LoRa is and what is isn’t. Now I understand Sigfox; with Sigfox I just connect my device to the Sigfox network and that’s all that is required. I can logon to the Sigfox website and see all messages send by my device, it could be hundreds of km from me but that doesn’t matter because information is sent through the Sigtfox network.
Is it the same for LoRa? If I want to send information over LoRa what do I need? How so I receive information? Do I need a LoRa gateway or is it like Sigfox where I go to the things network website? Do I need a LoRa gateway to receive information? And if so, does my LoRa device have to communicate with that gateway or can it communicate with any gateway? I assume in that case information is send around the LoRa network.
If someone could explain it in simple terms that would be most appreciated.
Thanks

LoRa is a communications technology that allows two LoRa devices (a trannsmitter and a receiver) to comminicate directly over long distances.

No gateways, websites or internet connections are required.

I suspect the question you meant to ask is ‘help me to understand LoRaWAN’

Take 52 minutes and you are up to date.
