Is "The Things Network" essentially a distributed Network Server?

I’m new to The Things Network trying to understand where it fits in vs. generic (non TTN) LoraWAN.

Every generic LoraWAN arch diagram I see looks something like this:

device > gateway > network server > application servers

So…does The Things Network simply replace that network server, and handle the routing of messages without needing your own network server? Is it all in the cloud, or is it distributed?

Do I have this right/close?

Thanks. Here’s a direct link to the answer, for others:

The Things Network provides a LoRaWAN Network Server.
