Starting from a clean slate

#1

Hi All,

I am from India and am very new to all this . I have ordered the gateways etc but instead of sitting idle till it comes, thought of doing something on my own. I have gone through wiki, forums etc . Lot of information. After hours of reading , I have few questions.

1) What is the frequency for India?
2) Shall I buy a MultiTech Gateway and configure for India's frequency using these steps
Configure MultiTech AEP conduit

3)After this shall I buy a the stuffs mentioned here to build my first node

First node

4) Shall I then buy any sensor connect it to Arduino board and play around - is there something simple to start with.

Please let me know if my steps are proper and if I am missing anything.

Thank you

1) http://www.ensembletech.in/lora-frequency-bands-india/
2) I use a Multitech Conduit Gateway. Can recommend it. Not the cheapest but easy to use and good support from Multitech.
3) If you buy Multitech Conduit ask them for the TTN Special Offer. It contains 1 Conduit Gateway, 2 mDots and 1 Developer Board. It costs about 500$.
Theres also a good Story for beginners on how to start with mDots
https://www.thethingsnetwork.org/labs/story/getting-started-with-the-multitech-mdot
4) If you want to connect sensors there is a more advanced Firmware I made myself. It supports some common sensors such as Temperatur,Humidity,Pressure and much more.

@Halfbrain Thanks for that. Spoke to the Multi Tech guys . They do have the kit . Will try it out . Once I set things up , will try sensors too . Thanks for the firmware too :slight_smile:

@Halfbrain Could you perhaps point me in a direction where to find the "TTN Special Offer" from Multitech? Is there an online shop somewhere stocking it, or should I somehow contact Multitech directly?

@jpmeijers
send a mail to mkydd@multitech.com

He is the one that gave me the special Order Form.

Can give it to you via PN. Don't know if I'm allowed to upload it public.

@Halfbrain @jpmeijers I was provided a quote for this Starter Kit .

Almost 1400 $ :slight_smile:

Let me try the email ID you shared.

Thanks

Hi, I have set up a Multitech Conduit and also configured a mDot and set up for ABP. I have reached s stage in which when I try communicating with PuTTY, it gives a blank screen. Would you be able to guide me please? I am stuck at this process.

@Halfbrain btw my gateway is working fine I believe . I checked the status at https://staging.thethingsnetwork.org/gatewaystatus/ . Thanks

@always_salil How do you try to connect to your Gateway. Via ssh?

(Richard V) #11

Depends on the host of the gateway. But mine are headless raspberry pi's with Linux, so yess ssh :slight_smile:

@Halfbrain , I am using the steps described at https://www.thethingsnetwork.org/labs/story/getting-started-with-the-multitech-mdot ..
Configured the node as ABP. One difference from the tutorial was, I couldn't find "Data Session key" in the device info , instead used "Network Session Key" to modify the sketch
https://staging.thethingsnetwork.org/applications/70B3D57ED0001762/devices/C0FC7484

At setp 4) Uploading the sketch, I am trying to see the debug data on serial monitor using putty. This is where I just see a blank screen . Putty connects ( I believe) but doesn't show anything at all.

@always_salil
So your mDot is plugged into the big dev board from multitech and you are connected via usb to this dev board? And you are trying to get debug outputs from the mDot while it runs not the conduit gateway?

I'm not familiar with this firmware and if there is any debug output generated at all. This could be one reason why you are not receiving anything at all in your putty terminal. You could perhaps check my firmware https://www.thethingsnetwork.org/forum/t/mdot-sensornode-firmware-ready-to-use/3050 to check if debug output to putty works in general because my firmware generated some debug outputs right at the start (initialization) of the node when it connects and it debugs the data that has been sent to the gateway. Standard Baudrate should be 9600 in my firmware.

Edit: I've seen on the page that there should be debug outputs generated in this example. Only thing if you are not using the dev board and instead connected the mdot to this smal dev board I would suggest to check cabeling of the ribbon cable. I also had problems if its connected wrong you are not getting anything :wink:

@Halfbrain Thanks for reply. Yes I am using the dev board from multitech and connected via usb to my computer. I am not at all an expert and trying to do what the tutorial says. As per it , it would send the data (through my gateway) and I can see it on my TTN dahsboard I guess. I am not sure. Thats what I guess.

I will try your firmware too.

I do not see any ribbon cable . I use MTUDK2-ST-MDOT, with USB
