I found a step by step tutorial on http://cpham.perso.univ-pau.fr/LORA/WAZIUP/Low-cost-LoRa-GW-step-by-step.pdf. Congduc Pham uses a Raspberry and a RFM95 module to set up a low cost gateway. Is it possible to use this concept for TTN?
No, with the RFM95 I can build only a single-channel gateway and they are not LoRaWAN-compatible (so not supported by The Things Network). Is that right?

Pham also has a youtube video for the build. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peHkDhiH3lE. There is no audio, but it helps decode some of his pdf. Looks like this was a dissertation/ proof of concept project.
