Welcome to The Things Network Great Yarmouth Community!
The goal is to provide access to TTN across the majority of the borough of Great Yarmouth and at the same time expanding Norfolk's coverage. I believed it would be better to have a smaller group for Great Yarmouth itself at the same time.
What is the things network?
More information can be found around TTN site, In a quick summary TTN Is a community and provider of a service that allows people to create devices with Long Range Radio (Or LoRa) that communicates information to and from the internet with the big advantages being cost, coverage and power consumption. This is done by setting up Gateways which act as the reciever and transmitters for the internet side and then each node has a smaller radio that transmits or recieves the data.
All sorts of devices can be made to use The Things Network including environmental sensors that monitor temperature, pressure etc. Sensors that could be used to measure parking spaces, lighting, traffic, trackers for pets and more! While the cost for the radio might be a little more there's virtually no running cost per node as compared to GSM where each node would require a sim card once there's a gateway the node's don't require any contract to use.
The Plan
Currently the plan is to build up the community and then look at expanding the network which may involve raising funds for the network to be expanded, assembling and testing the hardware and then installing it in suitable locations to provide greater spread of coverage.
Currently I have one Multichannel Gateway setup which has measured coverage for most of Gorleston and reaches parts of Hopton, Bradwell and the south of Great Yarmouth. However if a better location can be found for it then this might be possible to be moved.
We look forward to new members joining!
